The problem comes from having put a 5th gear into an original 4 gear box. The best way to shift the bike is positively, that is, slow and deliberate. Speed or power shifting will cause problems. When you open the clutch, shift deliberately and completely, and you should not have any trouble. When slowing down for red lights etc., downshift positively one step at a time, fully engaging the clutch after each downshift, and when you are stopped you will be in 1st. I have 1600 miles on mine, new in Feb '00, my daughter just got one of her own, 300 miles on it, we both have to shift just the way I described, if we try to hurry it, it seems to "jamb", but simply opening and closing the clutch and shifting the gears solves the problem.
